In English (week ending 18th November) by Tyler W

This week in English we wrote an additional chapter for Goodnight Mr Tom to fit in between chapters 7 and 8.

Our own chapters involved William Beech and Zacharias Wrench going on an adventure and something going wrong. Throughout the week we planned the story and at the end of the week we wrote our chapters.

This week in Guided Reading we read up to chapter 12 of Holes. We drew and wrote about certain sections of the chapter.

Last Week in Maths by Jessica and Paris

Last week in English by Molly and Aimee

In English we are still reading the book called Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian. We have been reading the fifth and sixth chapters. Goodnight Mr Tom is a great book which was written in the setting of 1930s. (When the world war II which was just about to begin.)
MichelleMagorian is 69 years old and was born the day after bonfire night. She has written lots of other books like Back Home, A Little Love song and much more. She was born in 1947.

Also in guided reading we have been reading more of the book called Holes. We have read all chapters up to chapter 13. Holes is a different kind of book to Goodnight Mr Tom. Goodnight Mr Tom is set in the World War II and Holes is set mainly in a camp.

Getting back to Goodnight Mr Tom. In this story Tom, one of the main characters, likes to keep himself to himself. Mr Oakley, also known as Tom is a character who is caring and getting very old. He is in his 60s and loves William so much. At the beginning of the story William and Thomas hardly know each other and now they are like family to each other. William always calls Tom, Mister Tom and doesn’t ask too many questions about Tom or anything, but he does to ask a couple of questions.

Willie was quite unusual and had never had a bath. He didn’t even know what it was! He thought it was for him to swim in and he said, “Please, mister. I can’t swim. I’ll drown!”

Willie doesn’t even know how to use a bar of soap. He got some soap on his hands and rubbed his eyes. That must hurt OWW.

On Remembrance Day we looked at some wartime poetry with Mrs Wellsted.

This week in English by Kirsten and Isabelle

This week in English we have been reading Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian. It is about a boy called William Beech being evacuated because of World War II. He has been evacuated to a 60 year old man called Thomas Oakley. In the story we found out how they cope together and become friends.
We have been answering questions in comprehensions and thinking about how characters feel.
We did a fun activity when we were starting to read the book. We had to guess how the person opened the door. We had to look at their emotions and actions and guess from there.
We have also been looking at spellings and looking at –tion and –sion words. Everyone in the class had to pick a word that they thought no one else had on their list. If they spelt it correctly and no one had it they got a raffle ticket.
We have also been writing diary entries from Tom's point of view and looking at how dialogue is set out.

In guided reading we have been reading a book called Holes by Louis Sachar. It is about a boy that is 'bad' and goes to Camp Green Lake and has to dig holes. We have been answering questions about it. His name is Stanley Yelnats and he isn’t coping very well.

Maths by Tia M and Rhianna

On Tuesday we recapped angles with a puzzle and then we did a new topic: bus stop method. This is how you do it.

First you ask yourself what would be a sensible answer. A good estimate to this question would be about 300.
Then you ask yourself how many 6’s in 1? The answer is none so then you put a 0 above the 1. Then you carry the 1 over to the 9.
You then ask yourself how many 6’s in 19? The answer is 3 so you put a 3 above the 9 and carry the remaining 1 over to the 0.
Then you ask yourself how many 6’s in 10? The answer is 1 with 4 left over. You write the one above the 0 and carry the 4 over to the 8.
You then ask yourself how many 6’s in 48? The answer is 8 with none left over. Then you put the 8 on top of the 8. Therefore the answer is 318.

We hope you learnt how to divide!
If you get a remainder, then just put remainder 3 or 4 et cetera.
