On the 17th November we selected Tyler S and Tegan for their book reviews.
Last week we selected; Maya, Ben, Logan, Lexi and Maddie for the sensible and mature way they represented our school during the week.

Homework 3rd to 10th November updated

In English we have been working on writing reports for the last couple of weeks, so we would like you to write a report about the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.
Unlike most reports you are allowed to use the past tense (you are writing about an historical event).
Your report should tell us:
* When the plot was planned
* Who was involved
* Where the attack was to take place
* Why they were plotting
* How they were going to carry out the attack
* What went wrong
Your report should be between 200 and 400 words long. It must be written in sentences and organised into paragraphs.

Whilst some of us were finding out about ShelterBoxes the other half of the year group were making shelters with Mr Porter:

100 Word Challenge

Since the start of term we have been once again encouraging the children to take part in the 100 Word Challenge activity run by 100wc.net 

Each week, a new prompt is published and the challenge is to write 100 words using the prompt (which may be a picture, a selection of words or a phrase). Each week we choose some of the work produced by our children to publish on our own 100WC blog and forward them for viewing by Team100WC. Team100WC view work produced by children from all over the world and they nominate work to be included in the weekly Special Showcase.

This week Lexi became our first writer to be included in the Special Showcase this year for her story: The professor and the crocodile.

Homework update 100 word challenge

This week we are going for five words. They must all be in your writing but can be in any order. The key is to plan beforehand so you get them all in and it tells a story.

The words are:

professor    crocodile    purple    twisted    difficult

Obviously, your story will need a character and I think these words give you a couple to choose from!

Paper copies by Friday 29th, on Edmodo by 30th September.

Now the 11+ is over we are going to be setting regular homework. To get us started we are asking for two pieces of writing to be completed. 

The new 100 Word Challenge will be added to Edmodo on Sunday and has to be completed by the following Saturday. (More about the 100 word challenge here). Some of the work children produce for the 100 Word Challenge will be published on our blog for the world to read!

The second piece of work is to write a biography of a character from one of Roald Dahl's books. We have been looking at biographical/autobiographical writing in English so we expect you to use the features we have been learning about, especially adjectives and correct verb tenses. This piece of work needs to be handed in by Friday 29th September.

This week we had a difficult choice to make and in the end we selected Ben M and Madeleine. Well done to both and thank you to everyone else for continuing their good starts.

Welcome to Year 6!

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Year 6!

We have a busy year of fun and hard work ahead of us and we look forward to working with you as parents.

Our main focus during the next term is the environment and our impact upon it. We will be learning about conservation and other ‘green’ issues.

In English this year, the children will be learning about a wide range of genres. They will be learning to identify and use different features and write in different styles. Spelling rules and grammar will also be taught during the English lessons. Pupils will read during Guided Reading sessions where the focus will be on answering questions about different texts.

In Maths, pupils will be concentrating on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division this term, learning both effective mental and written methods. They will continue to focus on a range of topics including: place value, percentages, fractions including decimals, data handling, money and time. Pupils will be given opportunities to use these skills in problem solving and in real life situations.

In PE we will be taking part in net games including volleyball and tennis, in addition to outdoor and adventurous sessions. Pupils need their full PE kits in school all week consisting of a pair of trainers, black shorts, yellow PE t-shirt and a tracksuit. In the second half term we will be focusing on indoor athletics and team building activities.

In Science this term pupils will be learning about animals including humans. They will be asking their own scientific questions and taking part in a range of investigations.

There will also be the opportunity for pupils in Year 6 to take part in Bike Ability. Further details will follow closer to the time.

Homework will be given out weekly after the 11+ tests have been taken. The pupils will be expected to complete both a piece of English and a piece of Maths homework each week.

Our Visit from Ciaran Murtagh by Kaycee

On Wednesday the 15th of March, year 6 got a visit from famous author Ciaran Murtagh. Ciaran came in to the school and spoke about developing characters he also spoke about what programs he writes and he even showed the children some of his books.
Ciaran’s first book was ‘Dinopants’ that was then followed by ‘Dinopoo’ and then that was followed by ‘Dinoburps.’ After that Ciaran went off the topic of dinosaurs and started to write different books. Until he wrote‘Dinoball’.

Curriculum Letter

Dear Parents/Carers                                                                                     

A Happy New Year to you all.

This term we will be continuing our English and Maths work, building on and revising all areas in preparation for the SATs in May. The work will focus on giving children opportunities to apply the skills they are learning in a range of different situations, both within English and Maths and across other areas of the curriculum.

Our main topic focus for this term is Wild Waters & Disasters. The majority of work covered will develop the children’s geographical knowledge. They will be learning about earthquakes, volcanoes, other natural disasters and how rivers are formed.

  

In science we will be learning about evolution and inheritance as well as living things in their habitats. Following this we will be revising and assessing all other scientific topic areas.

Within PSHE the children will work on two SEAL units: Going for Goals and It’s Good to be Me. They will also learn about keeping themselves safe in a range of situations. We will also be taking part in some basic First Aid training.

Staff from Alford Grammar will continue to be working with us to teach Computer Science.  The pupils will be learning a range of ICT skills.

PE will be on MONDAY and TUESDAY, but there will be occasions when this changes so PE kit should be in school all week. It is VERY IMPORTANT that all pupils have a dark tracksuit and trainers in school as they will be outside in a range of weather conditions!!

In preparation for the transition to secondary school homework will change this term.  Pupils will be given a piece of both English and Maths homework each week on a Friday which will be due in the following Friday.  In addition to this, there will be a selection of topic-based activities which the children are encouraged to complete with you.

We would like to invite you into school during the morning of Tuesday 7^th March 2017 to see us at work within our classrooms.
